The summit was held at Karen Christian College, Nairobi  from 5th to 9th December 2022 with delegates arriving on 5th while departure was on 9th. It attracted over 150 participants from across the Republic of Kenya including Education Researchers, Institutions, Colleges and Universities, Teachers, Lecturers, and Education Professionals with both National and County Governments being represented by Education Officers, Council of Governors Committee on Education, County Government Education CECs and COs, County Assembly Members of Education Committee. Present also was Kenya Union of Pre-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Education Sponsors/Financial Institutions as well as Religious/Community Opinion Leaders.

The summit objectives was to explore the extent to which the implementation of CBC is being impeded by challenges currently being experienced in the initial stages of implementation as well as proposing the solutions to the impediments to this transformation agenda which needs to be addressed speedily in order for learners to benefit optimally from the new changes.

The Summit was officially opened by Mrs. Alice Omondi on behalf of the Free Pentecostal Fellowship in Kenya (FPFK) who gave an elaborate history of the church and formation of Competence Building Society of Early Childhood Education for Kenya (CBSECEK).

Free Pentecostal Fellowship in Kenya (FPFK) Church lead in establishing the CBSECEK by sponsoring the first Annual Summit in 2013 in partnership with NORAD through Pentecostal Foreign Mission of Norway in co-operation with Karen Christian College under the Leadership of then Principal Hon. Daniel Omondi Ogada who is currently the Nominated MCA Homabay County Assembly Representing PLWDs.

Mrs. Alice says that strategically the church is focused in strengthening all institutions to offer quality and inclusive education; Learners trained in vocational skills are employed or self-employed and promote the realization of basic rights to education and social security through the following Intervention:

1. Strengthening and equipping FPFK instructions

2. Support access to quality and inclusive education

3. Supporting institution offering training in vocational skills

4. Facilitating Children protection and access to quality education for all

The church has well established institutions that work towards achieving its mission. Karen Christian College is an FPFK institution that seeks to train and develop servant leaders to serve the church and the community. FPFK also runs polytechnics in Kipsongo in Kitale, Nyambare in Siaya and Bukhungu in Kakamega which focuses in providing technical education to the youths in the community.

The summit was also addressed by H.E Dr. Erick Kipkoech Mutai, Governor Kericho County and the Chairman Council of governors Education Committee. The Governor in his address tabled the Council of Governors Strategic pathways in realizing the sustainability of Education service provision in Counties with regards to the devolve Functions as in the Kenya Constitutional 2010 Considering the ongoing Changes in Education Curriculum’

He also undertake to convene a joint meeting/summit with 47 County Assemblies Members of the Committee on Education together with the Council of governors as well as the National Government as a way of appreciating the normative foundation of the devolved system of government under Article 6(2) of the Constitution which provides that the two levels of government are distinct but inter-dependent and shall conduct their mutual relations on the basis of consultation and cooperation. In realizing the objects of devolution under Article 174 of the Constitution, regular consultations based on good faith are inevitable.

The 8th Annual Education Summit Themed: “Building Back Better in Education and Training: Reimagining, Reorienting and Redistributing Education in the Republic of Kenya’’ was  here to explore the extent to which the implementation of CBC is being impeded by challenges currently being experienced in the initial stages of implementation as well as proposing the solutions to the impediments to this transformation agenda which needs to be addressed speedily in order for learners to benefit optimally from the new changes.

The summit explored and appraises the gains and challenges of education change as well as consider some of the initial challenges that are related to inadequate human and material resources, incongruences between content and pedagogical practices and poor public participation among other issues.

It also considered how education and training systems can be reoriented to become transformative, challenging discrimination, and acting as drivers for a more equitable distribution of wealth and power in the Republic of Kenya. It is considered Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4) Quality Education for all as the guiding principle in all discussions as well as resolutions.

We recognized that achieving inclusive and quality education for all reaffirms the belief that education is one of the most powerful and proven vehicles for sustainable development. This goal ensures that all girls and boys complete free primary and secondary schooling by 2030.  It also aims to provide equal access to affordable vocational training, to eliminate gender and wealth disparities, and achieve universal access to a quality higher education.

We all agreed that neglecting education reforms at this time would be a mistake with long-term ramifications. Therefore, we must use the opportunity to build stronger links with children and set more young children on the right path for learning and lifelong success for the best interest of the Kenya Child.

Therefore, The Kenyan County and National Government in partnership with education stakeholders must continue to enhance the learning environment in all public schools countrywide through identification of policy gaps and continuous monitoring and evaluation of challenges derailing the education sector as it seeks to address existing challenges.

The 8th Annual Education summit 2022 strives towards Harnessing the diversity of strong civil society organizations delivering critical programming and advocacy for young children as well as strengthening the impact through coordinated action, driven in close collaboration and consultation with key stakeholders.
